What you will learn

It's challenging to paint something with complimentary colors such as red and green as the dominant theme of the work.

I'll show you how to mix a wide variety of reds as well as make each leaf slightly different in texture, value and detail. I'll explain how to balance your colors throughout your painting by mixing secondary and tertiary colors. The paint-along video demonstration will show how to design and draw from a photo without copying it. My palette is visible during the entire video.

At the end of the video I show you how to create an abstract background for your painting. Begin whenever you are ready, you can start, stop, pause and rewind as much as you want.

There is no time limit on the availability of this class.

Recommended Supplies

This course is suitable for oil or acrylic painters.

The supplies and specific colors I used are shown in the photo.

You can use traditional oil paints, solvent-free oil paints or acrylics.

You should have at least 1 blue, 1 yellow and 1 or 2 reds plus white to paint along with me. I usually like to have a warm and cool of each hue plus white. The paints and brushes I use in the video are show in the photo.

You can paint on any size canvas, I use a 12" x 9" in the video.

Plus, paper towels, water or paint thinner and a variety of brushes.

What students say

Not too long ago I moved from NH to CA. Took 6 months to get my house organized and bingo we were under “house arrest" for the virus and I hadn’t painted in almost a year and lost my creativity. I looked on "‘Bold Brush” and found a class listed as “paint the California desert” I liked the painting that advertised the class and when I spoke to Kristen I knew it was a go. I’m a moderately experienced painter and loved watching Kristen demonstrate and talk about what she was doing. I understood what she was saying and learned about round brushes and how to use them. I love to watch Kristen's brush work. It makes me want to paint. Not only that, she has a sense of humor, is refreshing easy to talk to, and loves to teach.

I have been following Kristen’s fun video lessons one after another on teachable for a while. With her teaching I learned how to mix vibrant impressionistic colors and brushstrokes. Paint along with her is always fun and enjoyable.
