We'll tackle a variety of uniquely beautiful California seascapes

I paint a wide variety of subjects but I am probably best known for my seascape and garden paintings. This course covers a lot of material for artists of all levels. I'll demonstrate how to paint seascape views including Balboa Island, Duffy boats, sea rocks, sea cliffs, reflections in wet sand, Southern California palm trees, shells on the beach and topics such as how to create depth on your horizon, transparent, believable looking water, reflections and more.

I'll explore color mixing, bold brushwork and when to blend:). I'll discuss materials and how to see the world differently through the eyes of an artist.

These classes include 12 hours of video lessons, downloadable pdfs, jpegs and design diagrams. I'll explore color mixing, bold brushwork and when to blend:). I'll discuss materials and how to see the world differently through the eyes of an artist.

 Student Review....

"In painting this seascape I found following your tutorial a lot easier as you described the way to hold the brush for the style you were using. I loved how you used a slightly different mix of colours as you continued, and you carefully and clearly explained the colours you were blending. This made it a lot easier to follow and achieve a result far greater than I thought I could have done otherwise. The construction lines were a great tool and explaining how they worked during the compositional stage really helped pull the foreground into the focal point. I kept this in mind as I continued the finishing touches and I believe it made a huge difference to my finished painting.

I was amazed that by following your tutorial I watched as rocks underwater came alive in my painting and adding sea foam was made easy and simple. This were challenges in the past the prevented me from even contemplating painting seascapes.

My big 'aha' moment was when you were describing shapes and discussing having too many of the same size. I then looked at the positive and negative shapes and saw my work from a completely different perspective. This was a game changer for me."

Thank you so much Kristen, this has been a wonderful painting to do, I have learnt so much and look forward to painting many more.

What students say

I enjoyed that immensely. Got so immersed in it I forgot about the open home we were having and when the real estate arrived there was paint everywhere! I’m a messy painter.

I can see from the photo there’s a few mistakes. But I learnt a lot and next time I do cliffs I hope to nail it.

I enjoyed Kristens class immensely.

I was impressed with how easily I was able to produce a lovely painting under her generous and detailed expertise.

I learnt skills that I can happily and confidently transfer to my own work. Kristen then took time out to critique my painting. With some very helpful advice I was able to touch up my painting transforming it from great to fantastic.

I’m loving this class and you have me thinking and forward planning my painting, if that makes sense. I'm also enjoying for the first time water based oils and round pointed brushes.

Not too long ago I moved from NH to CA. Took 6 months to get my house organized and bingo we were under “house arrest" for the virus and I hadn’t painted in almost a year and lost my creativity. I looked on "‘Bold Brush” and found a class listed as “paint the California desert” I liked the painting that advertised the class and when I spoke to Kristen I knew it was a go. I’m a moderately experienced painter and loved watching Kristen demonstrate and talk about what she was doing. I understood what she was saying and learned about round brushes and how to use them. I love to watch Kristen's brush work. It makes me want to paint. Not only that, she has a sense of humor, is refreshing easy to talk to, and loves to teach.

I have been following Kristen’s fun video lessons one after another on teachable for a while. With her teaching I learned how to mix vibrant impressionistic colors and brushstrokes. Paint along with her is always fun and enjoyable.

Each of your paintings comes with a personal critique by me. In this way, these are more than just "video painting lessons".

Below is a recent review I received from one of my critiques or "painting make-overs"

OMG! I can't believe what you have been able to do with your feedback video.

I was ready to take my painting off the wall of shame and use it for a Frisbee!

In less than 4 short minutes, your review and narrative gave me the steps I needed to be able to bring my painting to life.

I so appreciated that you explained which colours to blend, where to add them, how to apply the paint and why.

My feedback was so heartening and encouraging, it was like you were there with me from the other side of the world, in front of my easel, taking me by the hand and saying, "Here's all you need to do, and you've done really well in other aspects of the painting" (which I had never seen because I was too busy thinking I was a failure). Kristen's feedback, critique and review are from a place of genuine desire to want to bring the best out in her students, even when they can't see the improvements themselves. She brings her highly skilled talent and applies it too her canvas and her feedback just as equally and Kristen's deep caring method of delivery ensures that every aspect of the painting is addressed.

Thank you so much for restoring my faith in myself and reminding that the best is yet to come.
